Creating Social Inclusion for Children with Disabilities

Commitment by  Shane’s Inspiration

In 2013, Shane’s Inspiration committed to building five inclusive play environments and educational programs, one on each of five continents; creating social inclusion opportunities for 18,000 children with disabilities and their communities. One out of every ten people in the world, including an estimated 93 million children, lives with a disability and potentially experiences social exclusion or isolation. The aptitude to contribute, an imperative building block that impacts behavior and opportunities later in life, is initially developed in childhood and requires the ability to explore, play, learn, and interact with other children. These playgrounds will function as outdoor classrooms, bringing social and educational learning opportunities to all children who visit. In addition, the five partner communities will also benefit from a curriculum-based ability-awareness program. Together, these resources and interventions will support the development of bias-free environment for children with disabilities, and start them off on a life of greater opportunity.
